Troy, New York-A Brief Introduction

Troy, New York, is a city that’s home to a large university. It is the county seat of Rensselaer County and is located on the Hudson River’s east bank. It has ties with many of its nearby neighbors, including Albany, New York City, and Saratoga Springs. It is a part of the Capital District region. However, it has a small, independent-minded population.

Troy is in the central region of Rensselaer County and shares a border with Albany County on the Hudson River. The city is surrounded by the towns of Schaghticoke, Brunswick, and North Greenbush, and is just a short drive from the big apple. The town also borders the villages of Menands, Green Island, which are located in Albany County, and Watervliet, which are in Saratoga County. Kiliaen van Rensselaer named the area Pafraets Dael after his mother. After the English took control of the city in 1664, Dutchmen settled in the area. In 1707, Derick Van der Heyden bought a farm near the downtown area. Abraham Lansing laid out his town in 1774. In 1815, Jacob Van der Heyden purchased the farm. After a vote, the city was given its current name.
